Great reference to "Dave" in that blog. I've always loved that scene too. It's a guy who doesn't care about the hurting relationships for future deals. He just does what's best for the country.
As for Simmons solution, I think he's right on the whole "let's reward the stars" vibe. The NBA succeeds on the popularity of the stars. Cutting the middle-class (Ben Gordon, Hamilton, etc) down to size makes sense. Unfortunately, the players association represents the stars AND the middle class. No way would they ever go for such a deal.
